This Akureyri map is about one question: where does your tour start? Five starts are in town, a short walk apart. Two are a drive away, and no fare that uses them gets you there. Find yours before you compare Akureyri Iceland tickets.

The harbour by Hof: Oddeyrarbót 1 and 2

The whale boats from town leave from the pier beside the Hof Cultural Centre, the big round building on the water at Strandgata 12. Two operators keep ticket offices here: Oddeyrarbót 1 and Oddeyrarbót 2. Check which number is on your booking, and go to that door.

From the centre it is a short walk down to the water. From the cruise piers you walk along the harbour. Hof also holds the tourist desk, so it is the one building in town worth finding first.

The cruise piers: Oddeyrarbryggja and Tangabryggja

Large ships berth at Oddeyrarbryggja or Tangabryggja, and the tourist board says most tie up close to the centre or about ten minutes’ walk from it. The cruise terminal is on Laufásgata. The port days to the falls collect you there. One small-group day asks you to wait at the entrance facing the car park, not the seaside one, and its guide wears a turquoise jacket.

The cruise lake day meets you in the car park on your own pier instead: look for its sign. The lagoon’s summer shuttle leaves from Tangabryggja, hourly from 10:00 to 17:00.

Town-centre pickups: Hotel Kea, Brynja and Hof

The longer waterfall days start at Hotel Kea, Hafnarstræti 87-89, at 9:00, and collect you from your hotel if you are staying in town. One lake day picks up at three points at 9:00: Hotel Kea, Brynja at Aðalstræti 3, and Hof. The food walks all meet at Hof.

The northern lights hunt collects you from select hotels or a central meeting point, half an hour before it starts. The zipline has its own base in town: head for the back of the car park and look for its signs.

Forest Lagoon at Vaðlaskógur

Forest Lagoon is across the fjord from the town, in the Vaðlaskógur birch wood, 3.6 km from the centre. The lagoon runs its own free shuttle: hourly from the cruise pier in summer, with a town run at 17:30, and one evening run from Skipagata from September to May.

If you drive, the road east runs through the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel, which charges a toll per trip. You pay it online at veggjald.is by licence plate. No fare here includes getting to the lagoon.

Hauganes, 25 minutes north

Hauganes is a fishing village of about 140 people, 25 minutes north of the town along the fjord. The village whale boat leaves from Hafnargata 2: drive through the village to the far end of the harbour. You need a car, because the fare does not include the drive.

Húsavík, an hour east

Húsavík is about an hour east of Akureyri on the bay of Skjálfandi, and every boat there leaves from Garðarsbraut on the harbour. One ticket office sits opposite Húsavík church; the other flies big blue flags. You check in 30 to 40 minutes before departure.

No fare includes the drive. The Húsavík operator’s own reply to a cruise passenger who missed the start was that it is about an hour’s drive from the cruise port. On a port day, that is the boat to skip.

Drive times from Akureyri

The day tours drive east to Goðafoss and Lake Mývatn, and the longest go on to Dettifoss. You do not drive these yourself if you book a day tour, but the times tell you how much of your day is road.

Where do the whale watching boats leave from?
Most sail from the harbour beside the Hof Cultural Centre in the town centre, at Oddeyrarbót 1 and 2. One boat leaves Hauganes, 25 minutes north, and the Húsavík boats leave about an hour east. No whale fare includes getting to the boat.
Where do day tours pick up in town?
At Hotel Kea on Hafnarstræti at 9:00 for the longer days, with Brynja and the Hof Cultural Centre as further stops on one of them. The port tours collect you at the cruise terminal or on your ship's pier.
How far is Goðafoss from Akureyri?
Goðafoss is about 40 minutes east of the town by road. The port run gives you an hour at the falls; the longer days stop there for 15 to 45 minutes on the way to the lake.
Can I go whale watching from Húsavík on a cruise stop in Akureyri?
Only with your own transport and a long call. Húsavík is about an hour each way, check-in is 30 to 40 minutes before the sailing, and no fare carries a transfer. On a port day, the boats from the town harbour are the safe choice: the pier is a walk away.
How far is Forest Lagoon from Akureyri?
